Shakshuka is one of my favorite dishes, it’s filled with so much flavor, it’s hearty, and it’s sure to please a crowd.
This amazingly delicious dish is not only easy to make, but it is also healthy and can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Ingredients In This Shakshuka
The good thing about this dish is that you can make it even when you are running out of time because it only takes 15 minutes or even less depending on how fast you prepare your ingredients.
The main Ingredients for this tomato and egg dish are eggs, tomatoes, and cooking oil.
Since tomatoes are generally available year around, you can make this dish using fresh tomato sauce any time of year.
The following are the ingredients used for this shakshuka recipe:
Eggs. You can use whatever size you’ve got on hand. I like using medium eggs.
Canned Tomatoes. You can also use fresh tomatoes
Cooking Oil. I like using olive oil for this dish. You can use the cooking oil of your choice.
Onion. I like to chop my onion evenly.
Brown sugar. A pinch of sugar makes all the difference, it balances the tomato acidity.
Black pepper. You can also use white pepper

Use?
There are many variations when it comes to this dish, people add different ingredients depending on their preferences. Some prefer adding some ground beef to this dish for a meaty flavor.
The tomato sauce for this shakshuka recipe works well for other dishes as well (like tomato pasta or potato soup recipe)
You could add some baby spinach, bell peppers, or other vegetables toward the end of cooking.
Using Italian seasoning like dried oregano or basil, it’s a great way to enhance the flavors. Fresh herbs are good too if you happen to have some.
Tips For Making The Best Shakshuka
You can also prepare the tomato sauce in advance and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
You’ll need to place it in an airtight glass container or you can freeze the sauce.
Cooking the tomatoes longer helps enrich the taste of the tomato sauce.
Add some tomato paste for a rich color.
Some canned tomatoes are more acidic than others, adding a pinch of sugar helps balance the flavors.
How To Make Shakshuka
In a large saucepan or skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil, add garlic and onion, and sauté for about a minute, stirring constantly.
Add a can of tomatoes, cover with a lid and cook for 3 minutes. Add tomato paste and a pinch of brown sugar and cook for about a minute. Season the tomato sauce with salt & pepper as needed.
Once the tomato sauce is well-cooked and well-seasoned, crack the eggs one at a time right into the sauce.
Cover with a lid and cook for about 3-4 minutes then serve. If you like your eggs a bit runny, then reduce the cooking time to about 2 minutes.
